PhunkyFoods is an award-winning early years & primary school programme of healthy lifestyle curriculum activities, lesson plans & resource. It's mission is to improve the dietary and physical activity habits of young children across the UK by helping to create supportive learning environments for health in early years settings and primary schools.
PhunkyFoods had outgrown their previous website and they required a new site that was easier to navigate, update and work on mobile devices. In addition they needed a private member's area so that schools and teachers could login and gain access to the lesson plans, activities and resources.
The new PhunkyFoods website was a large project with hundreds of pages, the first major task was to organise the content. We worked together, auditing the existing content and understanding what content our site visitors would logically expect to see together.
A sitemap was created and revised a number of times with careful consideration given to how future changes may impact the overall structure. The sitemap gave us an overview of all the sections on the site, the main navigation and how everything fits together, a bit like an architect's blueprint for a new house. A carefully constructed sitemap was one fundamental element which would help site visitors easily navigate the new site and find information quickly and easily. Other elements were the design and layout of the site and the search functionality.
The main search functionality was added in the members area where the bulk of the information can be found allowing the members to quickly find what they are looking for by way of keyword search. We also implemented a faceted search of the recipes which enables users to explore the recipes by applying multiple filters.
The other main functionality aside from responsive design, was the private member's area we added which allows schools/teachers to register online and gain access to the hidden content.
The new website looks fun, vibrant and is visually appealing for its audience which mainly consists of schools and teachers.
Responsive design allows the website to be viewed on all mobile devices which is essential given that many teachers are using tablets in the classroom to access the material.
The members area enables the schools to quickly login to see the lessons plans and resources whilst denying access to non-members.
The site navigation and search functionality works really well allowing the users to quickly find the information they are looking for.
Finally using WordPress in combination with a visual page builder enables the content editors to easily update and add new content.
The project was a pleasure to work on in collaboration with PhunkyFoods and the website has been a great success, with great feedback from the schools, teachers and PhunkyFoods.
